For Mike & Maureen Reis, goats are a part of everyday life, but for many people it might be a surprise to know that there is an entire world of goat competition and exhibition thriving right here in Davis and its surrounding areas. From local events to National fairs that draw other goat farmers from all over the country, goat competitions are gaining in size and popularity.
In Mike and Maureen’s case, they got interested in competition goat breeding for some fun. After attending a few goat shows, the couple thought it would be an entertaining venture to get some goats of their own and start to show them at local fairs. The couple founded the Rocking 4R Boer Goat Farm in November 2002 with only twenty little does (female goats). They attended their first show in April 2003, showing only four does. Mike laughs as he remembers his first show. No one knew who they were and then, he says, “Out come these four little goats…” Though people might have never heard of the newcomers, Mike actually walked away with one of the top ribbons.
Since then, the farm has grown rapidly in both size and reputation.
