Sacramento area summers are notoriously scorching, and as the soft spring breezes become harsh, the Sacramentans begin to prepare for the 100 degree plus heat with dread. Suddenly, the drug stores are stock full of flip flops, sunscreen, and a myriad of fans: big fans, little fans, fans that squirt water, fans that are hand held—you name it, and it's probably in stock. It seems to be a bittersweet time for Sacramentans. Although the ideas of lemonade and clear skies inspire anticipation, the thought of unbearably hot days and boiling, sleepless nights is enough to pray for a hurricane.
However, there is one time of the year that the summer, however hot it may be, becomes as poignant and magical as a dream. Toward the end of August every year, there is something to be celebrated in the most unlikely of places: Woodland, California, of Yolo County. The Yolo County Fair is held at the fairgrounds on the corner of West and Gum. The Yolo County Visitor's Bureau states the county fair has been an annual event for the past seventy years. Although most may think the fair only has fattening (but delicious!) foods and rides for kids, they'd be wrong—the Yolo County Fair possesses a multitude of activities for people of every age.
